Donkeys are a member of the Equidae (or Equid) family, that also includes horses and zebras.  If you look closely, many donkeys have zebra-like makings on their backs and legs.

Donkeys’ long ears help them stay cool.  The large surface area of the ears help them expel internal heat, thereby allowing them to stay cool in hot environments. Their large ears also provide a keen sense of hearing that allows them to hear the call of another donkey over 60 miles away.

Donkeys braying is unique and requires vocalization while both inhaling and exhaling.  The hee occurs during air intake and the haw with air outflow. Neither horses nor zebras can make a similar sound.

Donkeys are highly social animals that don’t like to be alone.  They form life-long bonds with other donkeys or other pasture-mates. Typically, donkeys have one bestie and suffer if separated from their close friend.

Donkeys are naturally aggressive toward carnivorous wild animals, which makes them excellent guard animals for sheep and cows.

Unlike horses that flee when frightened, donkeys stand their ground.  Seen by some as “stubbornness,” donkeys are actually taking their time to determine for themselves whether it’s safe to move forward.

Donkeys are intelligent, affectionate and patient, which makes them great therapy animals and fine friends!!!
